Fall At-Home Activities

Filed under: Teacher Updates — lterakedis @ 4:08 pm

It is fall and winter is just around the corner.  Before the weather turns to snow and ice, make sure to enjoy some time outside!   Below are a few ideas of inexpensive or FREE fall activities that are fun and educational to do at home.

Event Image for Juggling Funny StoriesJuggling Funny Stories–Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 6:30 at Portage-Cragin Chicago Public Library.  In excited anticipation of Bookamania, Chicago Public Library’s annual celebration of Children’s Books, Master of Ceremonies Chris Fascione will be “Juggling Funny Stories” at sixteen branch libraries in November.

These free interactive programs for children ages 3 to 10 and families will feature a unique combination of storytelling, mime, juggling, clowning and colorful characters from literature.

Leave Collection:  Collect leaves in your yard or neighborhood.  Sort them into different group based on color, shape, or size.  Make a poster to display your collection.  Make your own math story problems using your leaves.

Treasure Map:  Take a walk outside with a friend (make sure to ask your parents and make sure they know where you are going!).  While you are walking find a “treasure” or secret place or thing.  Draw a map and write directions to your treasure.  Make sure to specify right and left or North, South, East and West on your map.  Count the steps in each part of your directions.  Give your work to another set of friends and see if they can meet you at your secret place!

Fall Writing:  Fall is a beautiful time of year.  There are lots of special sounds, smells, and sights.  Draw a picture of a place you enjoy outside, maybe your backyard or a nearby park.  Use colored pencils, markers, or paint to make your picture.  Write a poem or detailed paragraph about your picture.  Think about your five senses:  what you do see, hear, smell, taste, feel?  Use adjectives (describing words) to elaborate on your ideas.

Meet the Teacher February 24, 2009

p22905521Hi, I am Ms. Terakedis!  I grew up in Columbus, where I became (and remain) a die hard Ohio State University Buckeyes football fan.  I attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where I majored in Special Education.

After graduating from Miami in 2008,  I moved to Chicago (and reside in Wrigleyville).  I am still learning my way around the city and trying to take advantage of all Chicago has to offer.  In my free time, I enjoy going to sporting events, running, reading, spending time with friends, and I especially love traveling.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first year as a special education resource teacher at Falconer Elementary School and I am excited to be back for another great year!

Please contact me with questions, comments, or concerns.  You may call (773) 534-3560 or e-mail me at
